A Recap of our 2023 Environmental Learning Journey

It can be overwhelming to think about all of the environmental challenges our planet is facing, especially since we can’t address all of these issues as quickly as we’d like. That said, one concrete thing everyone can do is to learn how the environment around you works. Once you’re equipped with that knowledge you can help mobilize your community around measuring and ultimately improving the environment where you live.

Our mission at Temboo is to help as many people as possible to get involved in taking environmental action, and part of achieving that mission is environmental education. We hope that these blog posts are a gateway to educating people about what’s possible when it comes to understanding the environment at a very detailed level while using accessible, affordable tools.

Here is our roundup of introductory posts to help you delve deeper into what you need to know about green infrastructure, green roofs, bioswales, environmental AI, water quality, and watershed restoration.

An Introduction to Green Infrastructure

Everything you need to know about green infrastructure – what is it, why it is important, how it works, and some recent real world examples. A majority of our work with green infrastructure centers around helping people understand how effective their green roofs, bioswales, and rain gardens are at keeping stormwater out of sewers systems and combined sewer overflow out of our streets.

An Introduction to Green Roofs

Curious about green roofs? We’ll tell you what they are, how they benefit us, which types are available, and where to find them! We’ve worked with NCA to install soil moisture sensors to measure how much stormwater is captured during rain events in their green roofs. Learn more about it here.

An Introduction to Bioswales

What are bioswales? How do they help avoid floods, improve water quality, create habitat, and more? We’ve worked with Friends of the Wissahickon to install moisture sensors to measure how much stormwater is captured during rain events in their bioswale. You can read more about it here.

An Introduction to Environmental AI

In this post we take a look at what is expected from AI in the environmental realm, and how AI technologies are being applied on real projects today. At Temboo, we’re always on the look out for new technology that can help us better understand our environment and take action.

An Introduction to Water Quality

Everything you need to know about water quality – what is it, why it is important, how it is measured, and some recent real world examples. We’ve worked with different organizations to measure parameters such as dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and stream depth to understand local water quality and how it changes over time.

An Introduction to Watershed Restoration

Healthy watersheds are crucial for clean water, flood control, and wildlife habitats. Sadly, pollution and development can damage them, but restoration can be successful at restoring balance. At Temboo, we believe that we can’t fix what we don’t measure. We’re excited to be able to partner with organizations to measure and understand their local water quality.
